Forecasting Is as Much about Art as It Is about Science

Colgate was among the first group of companies to which Wal-Mart began releasing its store sales data via an Internet portal. As part of our account relationship with them when I was at DEC, they asked me to work with one of their analysts, Maurice Mora, on reviewing the data and trying to find out what we could learn from it.

This was before I was at IRI; it was my first experience working with POS data. The first discovery was the end of flat sales at retail assumptions. The data for each item were all over the map. They were impossible to predict. Lots of peaks and valleys and no real pattern that was obvious to us at first. While I can't show actual data, I can draw an overly simplified representation of what we were looking at as illustrated in Figure 5.4, Retail Store Sales Data.
